Intense Pulsed Light

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a non-invasive, in-office procedure performed by an optometrist to treat the root causes of eyelid inflammation and dry eye.

By delivering warm pulses of light around the eyes, it reduces inflammation, kills bacteria/Demodex mites, and melts solidified oils in the meibomian glands.

How it Works

Thermal Regulation

The light converts to heat, liquifying clogged, stagnant oil (meibum) in the eyelid glands, allowing it to flow freely.

Anti-inflammatory & Anti-parasitic

It closes abnormal, inflammatory blood vessels (telangiectasia) on the eyelid margin and reduces the bacterial load.

Result

Improved oil quality leads to a more stable tear film, reducing evaporation and alleviating dry eye, burning, and irritation.

Outcome

Most patients report reduced dependency on eye drops and significant improvements in comfort within a few sessions.

IPL FAQs

Before IPL treatment, your doctor will place protective eye shields over your eyelids and apply a thin layer of cooling gel around the eyes to protect the sensitive skin.

A small device is then used to deliver pulses of light to the eyelids. The heat helps soften and melt thick secretions blocking the oil glands.

Once the meibomian glands are opened, your doctor may gently express a small amount of oil to help restore normal oil flow.

The doctor applies flashes of light to the skin around the eyelids and cheek area. It is generally fast (10–15 mins) and comfortable.

Most patients notice an improvement in dry eye symptoms after their first or second IPL treatment. For best results, monthly treatments are typically recommended over four months.

More severe cases may require additional treatments to maintain healthy meibomian gland function and reduce recurring symptoms. IPL may also be combined with other dry eye treatments for greater relief.

A series of 4 sessions, Day 1, Day 14, Day 45 & Day 75 is typically required for maximum benefit.

4 sessions $650 or 1 session $180

If chronic dry eye is affecting your daily life, your eye doctor may recommend IPL therapy.

IPL targets the underlying cause of dry eye to provide longer-lasting relief. While artificial tears, warm compresses and eyelid scrubs can ease symptoms, they often provide only temporary relief and may be better suited to mild or moderate dry eye.

Always consult your optometrist with any questions or concerns you may have before seeking treatment.
