Blepharitis

Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids. It often causes redness, irritation, dryness and a tired, gritty feeling.

Blepharitis commonly occurs when the oil glands in the eyelids become blocked or produce excess oil. Although uncomfortable, it is not usually sight‑threatening.

Each upper eyelid contains around 25 of these glands, and each lower lid about 20. They run vertically through the lid and open just behind the eyelashes.

Blepharitis is a long‑term condition, but symptoms can be controlled with a regular lid‑hygiene routine, including:

Warm compresses

Applying gentle heat to the eyelids helps soften the oils in the glands.

Lid massage

Light massage can help express the oils from the glands and improve their function.

Lid cleaning

Cleaning the eyelid margins helps remove excess oil and debris. Symptoms may temporarily worsen in the first couple of weeks as blocked oils begin to clear.

Ongoing treatment

Once symptoms settle, many people continue with a once‑daily routine to maintain comfort.
